The True Stages of Breast Cancer – What to Look For

Breast cancer often occurs in stages. Some cancers spread slowly while others spread quickly. There are cancers that are predictable in growth and there are those that spread unpredictably. Cancers can be unpredictable because they have to do with the way the body uses estrogen (a female sex hormone). The stage itself will depend mainly on
the size of the tumor and the degree to which the cancer has spread. Stage 0 Stage 0 refers to “Noninvasive carcinoma” (a cancerous mass that is contained to a specific part of the body). With this stage the cells are abnormal, but are not cancerous as of yet.

Stage 1 and 2 With stage 1, the tumor has become cancerous and has grown to an inch in
diameter, but has not spread beyond the breast. With stage 2, one of three things has happened: 1) The cancerous tumor grows to less than one inch across and has spread to the lymph nodes (vessels that are part of the immune system) under the arm, 2) The cancerous tumor has grown to be about one and two inches, has not reached the lymph nodes as yet, but is leaning in that direction, 3) The cancerous tumor is larger than 2 inches in diameter and has not moved.

Stage 3 In stage 3, the cancerous tumor has grown to more than two inches, and has reached and penetrated the lymph nodes of the underarms. In some cases this type of cancer has been known to spread to the lymph nodes near the breastbone, or other tissue near the breast.

Stage 4 With stage 4, this is metastatic (cancer that has spread so that there are multiple dangerous masses) cancer. The cancer has spread beyond the breast and lymph nodes to other parts of the body. Cancer, as it progresses, becomes harder and harder to defeat. This is why frequent check-ups are a must. Breast Cancer

Overview

Many breast cancers are sensitive to the hormone estrogen. This means that estrogen causes the breast cancer tumor to grow. Such cancer is called estrogen receptor positive cancer or ER positive cancer.

Some women have what’s called HER2-positive breast cancer. HER2 refers to a gene that helps cells grow, divide, and repair themselves. When cells have too many copies of this gene, cells – including cancer cells – grow faster. Experts think that women with HER2-positive breast cancer have a more aggressive disease and a higher risk of recurrence than those who do not have this type.

No one knows the exact causes of breast cancer. Doctors often cannot explain why one woman develops breast cancer and another does not. They do know that bumping, bruising, or touching the breast does not cause cancer. And breast cancer is not contagious. You cannot “catch” it from another person.

Research has shown that women with certain risk factors are more likely than others to develop breast cancer.

A risk factor is something that may increase the chance of developing a disease. Studies have found the following risk factors for breast cancer: -

* Age: – The chance of getting breast cancer goes up as a woman gets older. Most cases of breast cancer occur in women over 60. This disease is not common before menopause.

* Personal history of breast cancer: – A woman who had breast cancer in one breast has an increased risk of getting cancer in her other breast.

* Family history: – A woman’s risk of breast cancer is higher if her mother, sister, or daughter had breast cancer. The risk is higher if her family member got breast cancer before age 40.

Having other relatives with breast cancer (in either her mother’s or father’s family) may also increase a woman’s risk.

How is breast cancer diagnosed?

Clinical breast exam : – Your health care provider feels each breast for lumps and looks for other problems. If you have a lump, your doctor will feel its size, shape, and texture. Your doctor will also check to see if it moves easily. Benign lumps often feel different from cancerous ones. Lumps that are soft, smooth, round, and movable are likely to be benign. A hard, oddly shaped lump that feels firmly attached within the breast is more likely to be cancer.

Diagnostic mammogram : – Diagnostic mammograms are x-ray pictures of the breast. They take clearer, more detailed images of areas that look abnormal on a screening mammogram. Doctors use them to learn more about unusual breast changes, such as a lump, pain, thickening, nipple discharge, or change in breast size or shape. Diagnostic mammograms may focus on a specific area of the breast. They may involve special techniques and more views than screening mammograms.

Ultrasound : – An ultrasound device sends out sound waves that people cannot hear. The waves bounce off tissues. A computer uses the echoes to create a picture. Your doctor can view these pictures on a monitor. The pictures may show whether a lump is solid or filled with fluid. A cyst is a fluid-filled sac. Cysts are not cancer. But a solid mass may be cancer. After the test, your doctor can store the pictures on video or print them out. This exam may be used along with a mammogram.

Surgery for Breast Cancer Treatment

How is surgery used in breast cancer treatment?

Surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible is the primary treatment for breast cancer. Today, women have many surgical options and choices. The type of surgery performed depends upon: -

* the size and location of the breast lump or tumor

* the type and stage of the breast cancer (If the cancer has spread within the breast or has spread outside of the breast to the lymph nodes, or to other parts of the body.)

* the size of the breast

* the woman’s preference There are several types of breast surgery. Your physician can explain the benefits and risks of each type, in addition to answering any questions or concerns you may have prior to surgery.

You Have A Breast Cancer Diagnosis, What Is Your Chance Of Survival?

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with breast cancer it is devastating news. It is important to know that your breast cancer survival rate can be determined by what stage your breast cancer is in. With the scientific advances today in the medical field a breast cancer diagnosis is not as dire as in the past. There are various factors that may affect the chance of surviving breast cancer.

The stage the cancer is in is the primary determination of your breast cancer survival rate. Stages range from zero to four. The earliest stage of cancer is stage zero. Your breast cancer survival rate is greater if your cancer is detected in the early stages.

Most breast cancer survival rates are based on five years post diagnosis. Breast cancer survival rates are improving all the time. Researchers make new discoveries all the time. Currently the use of biomarkers may be a useful indicator it finding cancer in very early states for those with a high risk of contracting the disease. Other factor that may affect the survival rate is the age of the patient. Women forty years and older have a little bit better chance of survival than younger women. There are different types of cancer that can affect the survival rate. Some cancers require more aggressive therapies and are more dangerous while others have more positive prognosis and better survival rates.

Hormones also may affect the rate of cancer growth. Hormone treatments are sometimes indicated to help prevent cancer growth. With all the factors that may affect an individuals breast cancer survival rate that generalized statements can be misleading. Your oncologist or physician is the person in the best position to give you your chance of survival.

Even so, there are predictions based upon the staging of breast cancer. The typical survival rate is presented in the table below:

Stage — > Five Year Average Survival Rate

0  –>  100%

1   –> 100%

11A   –> 92%

11B  –> 81%

111A –> 67%

111B –> 54%

IV –> 20%

This table is based upon date from the American Cancer Society and does not take into consideration individuals who die of other conditions. The survival rate decreases for each stage after seven years. But, it is important to know that these are averages and that even women with breast cancer in the advanced stages can live much longer than seven years.

Through research alternative treatments are being discovered all the time. There are studies that are looking at the effectiveness of the use of aspirin to improve the survival rates of women. A study by Harvard Medical School showed a fifty percent improvement of the survival rates of women who took aspirin. It also showed a decreased risk of the cancer returning. The study did not determine exactly how or why aspirin reduces risks but it does confirm earlier studies. The success of aspirin may be due to its anti-inflammatory benefits pointing to realization that cancer may be an inflammatory disease, or it could be lowering the estrogen levels of the blood or be working an a completely different way.

Breast Cancer Prevention, A new Hope

“Breast cancer research is making a serious headway in its quest to find ways to prevent the disease. New drug therapies may help save millions of lives.”

One out of every eight women in the world battles with breast cancer during her lifetime. It is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the United States. Causes of breast cancer remain unknown, and its symptoms show up late in many cases. As the age increases, the risk of breast cancer increases in women. But there are new breakthroughs in medical research and there is renewed hope of a cure that can save millions of lives.

Biphosphonates May Prevent Breast Cancer

Biphosphonates are commonly used drugs to treat osteoporosis. A study funded by the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH) has revealed that these drugs may inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells. The study found out in its research sample of about 3,000 women that the ones who had used biphosphonates for the maximum period of time cut down their breast cancer risk by nearly two-fifths. However, this result was observed only in women who did not suffer from obesity.

There have been positive reactions to the study from other cancer research organizations in Europe. However, most leading researchers are of the opinion that these findings need to be made more conclusive with more detailed testing in women who are at a higher risk of the disease.

New Preventive Drug in the Pipeline

The Scottish Funding Council and Breakthrough Breast Cancer funded a study conducted by researchers at University of Edinburg that may lead to the development of a new drug. The drug may help to prevent breast cancer in about 20 percent of the patients. About half the breast cancer tumors are known to produce C35 protein, which is suspected to one of the causes of breast cancer.

The new research is working on some chemical agents that may prevent the production of C35 protein. The test results in their initial stages have been positive, but the formulation of a drug for human consumption is still some time away. It is critical to reach a chemical agent that works without causing any harm to the human body, which is the main thrust of the research.

Vaccine to Prevent Breast Cancer

Scientists at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Institute in Ohio have made a path-breaking discovery that may finally result in a preventive vaccine against breast cancer. The vaccine that has been in developmental stages for nearly one decade has finally achieved success in preventing the disease in a test group of mice. In addition to preventing the disease, the vaccine also worked to remove the existing tumors in the mice.

Cleveland Clinic is gearing up to seek clearance from the regulatory authorities for human trials of the vaccine. The preventive vaccine would be aimed at all women over the age of 40. Nature Medicine journal has reported the findings of this research with personal interviews of the Cleveland Clinic research team.

Drug to Combat Breast Cancer in African-American Women

Scientists at Northwestern University experimented with a combination of anti-cancer drug therapy called arsenic trioxide with nanotechnology, which has resulted in new drug with positive results against a specific type of breast cancer. This is a highly aggressive breast cancer known as triple negative, which has a high prevalence among African-American women.

This cancer spreads rapidly and usually the patient has low chances of survival. However, the new drug therapy uses nanotechnology to send arsenic through the blood without letting the body be harmed. Arsenic gets directly delivered to the cancerous cells, and avoids the healthy cells. So the new delivery mechanism has led to a new hope not just for breast cancer, but for several other types of cancer as well.
Fish Oil Supplements May Help to Prevent Breast Cancer

The Journal of Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention has published the results of a new study that shows the positive effect of fish oils in prevention of breast cancer. The extensive 6-year study involving over 35,000 women, conducted by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, has indicated that fish oil supplements can reduce the breast cancer risk among post-menopausal women by about one-third.

The research believes its findings are interesting, but further research is essential to arrive at any conclusive judgment that fish oil is actually responsible for prevention of this disease. Fish oil may help to reduce inflammation in the breast cells, which in turn may prevent the cells from becoming cancerous.

Once, belief is to be got its own identity; the existence of practice should automatically come by the deeds of the victims or followers. Sometimes belief might be deteriorate due to the business, cost effective and the rationalism should also vanish the irrational beliefs so that we can eventually conclude beliefs exist by the practices which may takes place to over come the problems or to adjust with the nature.

Did A Physician Explain To You That You Had A Benign Mass While You Had Breast Cancer

Female patients trust that their doctors will know the difference between a serious health issue and something that fails to pose any risk to their wellbeing. One area where is this especially true is with breast cancer. Female patients trust in physicians to do every appropriate tests to find any cancer that may be present as early as possible. The existence of a lump in a breast heightens worry immediately. And here is where the doctor can do the right thing or the wrong thing. Most doctors acknowledge that the right thing is to perform tests to establish if that lump is cancerous. The reason most physicians acknowledge that this is the right plan of action is because a physician cannot determine if the lump is cancerous or benign based only doing a physical examination (even when coupled with other variables like the woman’s age and family history).

Roughly some eighty percent of breast related issues are not the result of breast cancer. Moreover, the majority of new breast cancer cases arise in women who are older than fifty. It is thus not surprising that certain physicians will conclude that an abnormal finding from a clinical breast examination, particularly in a woman who is not yet fifty, as due to a cyst and not from breast cancer. The odds are in favor of such a diagnosis.

However, this is not the end of the story. In case breast cancer is found before it can reach a late stage (for example, stage 0, stage I or stage II), the 5-year survival rate is usually at least eighty percent. The 5-year survival rate is a statistical measure that studies have demonstrated as projecting the percentage of patients who outlive the disease for a minimum five years subsequent to detection. Hencel insurance company, a five-year survival rate above 80% means that, statistically, more than eighty out of every one hundred patients with a less advanced stage breast cancer will, given appropriate treatment, survive the disease for at least five years following diagnosis.

In the event that breast cancer spreads before a diagnosis is made a woman’s likelihood of outliving the cancer for mroe than 5 years is dramatically diminished. By the time the cancer gets to stage 3, the woman’s chances are diminished to about fifty-four percent. If the cancer reaches stage 4, those odds fall to about twenty percent. So, eighty percent or higher with early detection compared to fifty-four percent or lower with late detection.

Approximately twelve percent of females will have breast cancer in their life time. This year alone, roughly 190,000 women will be newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Sadly, more than 40,000 women will die because of breast cancer. How many of these women would survive their breast cancer if their doctors had investigated the finding of a mass in the breast or an abnormal finding on a clinical breast exam and had diagnosed the breast cancer earlier, before it spread or metastasized?

By performing a clinical breast examination a doctor simply cannot correctly differentiate between a benign cyst and a cancerous growth. Given this a doctor should generally recommend that diagnostic testing be done instantly if a lump is found in a woman’s breast. Examples of diagnostic tests can include an imaging study such as a mammogram or an ultrasound, or a sampling, such as by biopsy or aspiration. Each can fail to diagnose a cancer thus it may be necessary to do more than one test before breast cancer can be ruled out.

If a doctor diagnoses a lump in the breast of a female patient as simply a benign cyst based only on a clinical breast examination, that doctor places the patient at risk of not finding out she has breast cancer until it progresses to an advanced, perhaps untreatable, stage. The failure to conduct appropriate diagnostic testing, like an imaging study such as a mammogram or ultrasound, or a sampling, such as a biopsy or aspiration, may constitute a departure from the accepted standard of medical care and may result in a malpractice claim.

It is shocking to live with breast cancer statistics rising to 1 in 8 women developing some form of breast cancer in their lifetime. Women 50 and older are at the greatest risk. Breast cancer is usually detected with mammograms or self breast exams. About 200,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year. While the survival rate is increasing, it is important to note the increase in occurrence over the last 50 years. Let’s examine what causes breast cancer so we can prevent and deal with breast cancer naturally.

Causes of Breast Cancer

Everyone’s cancer is caused by something different, and so pinpointing the cause of breast cancer usually isn’t high on the list of priorities once a woman is diagnosed with the potentially deadly disease. But, in general cancer is caused by free radicals, or deformed cells, that attach themselves to your good cells.

Breast cancer specifically has been linked to too much estrogen found in the body. There are several reasons why women have too much estrogen. The birth control pill increases the amount of estrogen in the female body. Hormone replacement therapy also has been shown to cause breast cancer because of its tampering with hormone levels.

High levels of preservatives, herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals used to treat food contribute to breast cancer. And estrogens found in dairy and meat can be overwhelming to the body.

Holistic Treatment of Breast Cancer

Plant estrogens like soy are a great way to combat breast cancer. These plant estrogens give the female body everything it needs without the harmful effects. Women with breast cancer should increase their intake of soy foods. When possible they should try to reduce the amount of dairy in their diet and replace it with soy.

Eating whole grains, green leafy vegetables, and fruit also give the immune system a boost and enable the body to wage its own war against cancer. Vitamin and mineral supplements help to fill in the gaps of nutrition you may miss from your diet. Antioxidants counteract the free radicals floating around your body, bind with them, and the body flushes them right out so they can do no harm.

Mental and spiritual well being is also important in a holistic approach to fighting breast cancer. Meditation, stress reduction, improved outlook, and positivity all help improve your mental well being. And as many of us realize, you are what you think about. So change your focus, look for the beauty in life, and take care of yourself, inside and out.

Exercise is a fantastic way to improve your immune system, build a physically healthy body, and improve your mental well being at the same time. Yoga, Tai-Chi, and walking are all beneficial ways to exercise the body and mind without overdoing it and causing damage.

A Look at Treatment and Rate of Survival for Breast Cancer

Are you worried about…breast cancer?

Many women worry about getting breast cancer| , sometimes because one of their relatives has developed the illness. This section explains:

Why having just one, or even two, relatives with cancer
does not normally mean that there is an inherited genetic link in your family.
What we know about the causes of breast cancer.
What you can do to help yourself.
Cancer genes/family history

Genes carry the biological information we inherit from our parents. They affect the way our bodies grow, work and look. Changes (mutations) in certain genes can increase the risk of breast cancer in family members who inherit the genetic change. But only a small number of breast cancers are thought to be due to an inherited altered gene running in the family.

Two gene changes – called BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations – can run in a family and increase the breast and ovarian| cancer risk of those family members who inherit the genetic change. But they are not common.

How does my family history affect my risk of developing breast cancer?

It is only likely that a genetic mutation that can increase your breast cancer risk is present in your family, if you have:

three close relatives from the same side of the family (your mother’s or your father’s family) who developed breast cancer at any age
two close relatives from the same side of the family who developed breast cancer under 60
one close relative who developed breast cancer at the age of 40 or under
breast and ovarian cancer on the same side of the family, or a male relative with breast cancer, or a close relative with cancer in both breasts.

Your close relatives are your mother, sisters or daughters. They are sometimes called your first degree relatives.

If your family is like this, and you are worried about developing breast cancer yourself, you might want to talk to your GP. They will ask you questions about your family history. If you have a family history of any unusual cancers/childhood cancers or you have Jewish ancestry or other ethnic background (where a faulty breast cancer gene is more common), you should mention that to your GP. If your GP thinks there’s a chance that you might have an increased risk of developing breast cancer because of your family history, they will refer you to a genetic counsellor, family cancer clinic or a cancer specialist.

All women, when they are 50, are invited to join the NHS Breast Screening Programme| and offered three yearly mammograms until they reach 70. Women who seem to have inherited an increased risk of getting breast cancer may be offered yearly mammograms, and sometimes MRI scans, from an earlier age.

If you only have one middle-aged or elderly relative who has developed breast cancer, or one case of breast cancer on each side of your family, this does not significantly increase your risk. If you had one of the ovarian or breast cancer genes in your family, then it is likely that more than one relative on the same side of the family would have developed ovarian or breast cancer.

It can be a normal reaction to severe illness in the family, or to bereavement, to feel more vulnerable to the same disease. If you can’t stop worrying, you may find it helpful to see a counsellor, who can help you get things back into perspective. You can ask your GP, or call our nurses| for details of a local service. You could also call the Cancer Counselling Trust| to speak to a counsellor.

Mind| , the mental health charity, has published a leaflet called ‘How to Stop Worrying’.

Cancer risk

The cause of most breast cancers is not known. But we do know that some things – called risk factors – can increase our chances of developing cancer. Some risk factors are very likely to cause cancer, whereas others will only very slightly increase our likelihood of getting it.

Having a particular risk factor for cancer, or being exposed to one, doesn’t mean that we will definitely get cancer, just as not having it doesn’t mean that we won’t. Smoking is a good example of this. If you smoke, it isn’t certain that you will get lung cancer , just as if you don’t smoke, it’s not certain that you won’t. But smoking will greatly increase your risk of getting lung cancer. Nine out of ten people who develop lung cancer are smokers.

Cancer is very common and nearly 1 in 3 of us will develop it at some time during our lives. This means that most of us will have relatives who have had cancer. Surveys have shown that many people are worried that a history of cancer in their family greatly increases their risk. People often worry that an increased risk of cancer can be inherited, or passed on from one generation to another. In fact less than 1 in 10 cases of cancer (between 5 and 10%) have been shown to be due to a family history of the disease.

Other risk factors

Other risk factors in the development of breast cancer can play a bigger role than family history.

Age

Breast cancer is mainly a disease of older women and is rare in women under 50. Only 1 in 9 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, but the older you are the more likely it is that you will develop the disease. In the UK more than half of breast cancers occur in women over 65. Women under 50 are at far lower risk of getting breast cancer than older women, and women under 40 have an even lower risk.

Hormone levels

There is some evidence that the more years a woman has had periods, and is therefore exposed to the female hormone, oestrogen, the more prone she is to breast cancer. This means that you may have an increased risk of developing breast cancer if you:

started your periods at an early age (under 12)
had a late menopause (after 50)
have not had any children, or had children after you were 30
have not breastfed or breastfed for less than 12 months in total.
The contraceptive pill

Taking the Pill slightly increases a woman’s risk of getting breast cancer. The risk decreases again after stopping the Pill.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

There is evidence that women over 50 who take HRT increase their risk of developing breast cancer. The risk begins to increase after 1–2 years of HRT use, and then goes on increasing the longer HRT is used. Combined HRT increases risk more than oestrogen-only HRT. Risk begins to decrease when HRT is stopped and is thought to be back to normal around five years after stopping.

Obesity

Being overweight, particularly after the menopause, is a risk factor for breast cancer. This seems to be because overweight people have different hormone levels compared to people who are of normal weight.

Lack of exercise

There is evidence that regular exercise reduces women’s breast cancer risk. This might be because physical activity regulates women’s hormone levels.

Alcohol

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol seems to increase women’s breast cancer risk. The European Code Against Cancer recommends that to reduce their risk of developing cancer women should drink no more than one unit of alcohol per day. A unit is half a pint of ordinary strength beer, lager or cider or one small glass (125ml) of wine or a single measure (25ml) of spirits.

Other possible risk factors

It has been suggested that particular diets, some dietary supplements and deodorants can increase the risk of developing breast cancer. However, there is no good evidence to support these claims. Scientists are studying many different possible factors, but so far the risk factors listed in this leaflet are the only ones where there is good evidence.

Reducing your risk

Although many of the known breast cancer risks are beyond our control there are other risk factors, known as lifestyle risk factors that you can control. It has been estimated that about one half (50%) of all cancers diagnosed in the UK could be avoided if people made changes to their lifestyles. These changes don’t mean that you definitely won’t get cancer – but they make it less likely. So here are some things that you might want to consider:

Take up some regular exercise

You don’t need to go to the gym – walking, cycling or gardening, done regularly, can be enough.

Try to maintain a healthy weight

Eating a balanced diet| , which contains plenty of fruit and vegetables, can help. Your GP can give you more advice.

Avoid smoking and drinking excessive amounts of alcohol

|

Although making these changes may reduce your risk of developing breast cancer, they do not guarantee that you won’t get cancer. But all of the above strategies will improve your health generally.

Signs and symptoms

Breast cancer, when it is found early, can be treated successfully. Unfortunately, the early signs of breast cancer can be hard to detect and are often unclear. You should see your GP if you have:

a change to the outline or shape of the breast
lumps or bumpy areas
nipple discharge that is new for you and not milky
feelings of discomfort or pain in one breast that are different from normal (many women say that their breasts are more tender or a bit lumpy just before they have their period).

In most cases, changes to your breast do not mean that you have cancer. But it is worth seeing your doctor. There is no reason for you to feel that you are wasting your doctor’s time if you have discovered a change in your breasts.

Regular checks and screening for breast cancer

Women over 50 years are invited to join the national screening programme and have a mammogram (x-ray of the breasts) once every three years until they reach 70. Women of 70 and over can continue to have regular mammograms by contacting their GP, who will arrange an appointment in a breast screening clinic. From 2010 all women aged between 47 and 73 will be called for regular breast screening.

Mammography can help to detect breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat.

Breast Cancer: What is an ”early Stage” Breast Cancer

An “Early Stage” breast cancer is sometimes referred as Stage 1 breast cancer. In such cases, the affected region is less than 2–2.5 centimetres in diameter. However, cancer does not spread inside the tissue of the breast. In fact, among all the women detected for breast cancer in the U.S, 63% of them suffer from “Early Stage” Breast Cancer, as it is still localized to the tissue of the breast.

Today, Breast Cancer is considered to be one of the most deadly and emotional types of cancers occurring in women. However, it should be kept in mind that it is not only women, who are at a risk of having breast cancer. Men can also have such type of cancers, but most patients are female.

Early detection increases chances of survival

If the breast cancer is an early stage one and it is properly detected and treated, the survival rate of that patient increases to a large extent. The best trick to fight breast cancer is to catch it early on and generally women can detect it by finding a typical lump in any one of their breasts. Women should immediately check out in such cases but they should not worry, as all lumps are not cancers.

Early stage breast cancer cannot always be cured, even though cancerous cells are unable to reach the lymph nodes. Women, who catch early stage breast cancer, gets treated at that point and many of them are able to enjoy life in a normal lifestyle for more than ten years. It is highly recommended for every woman to check her breasts regularly to be on the safe side, so that possible cases of breast cancers can be detected early. With proper treatment, women can enjoy high survival rates.

Symptoms of Early Stage Cancer

An early stage breast cancer can be detected on the basis of various symptoms. Some of them are unexpected abnormal changes in the anatomy & the size of the breast, appearance of the skin of the breast becomes dimpled & puckered, sudden unexpected changes in the size and shape of the nipple like the changing position and nipple being inverted. Other symptoms include abnormal discharge from the nipple, development of rash in the nipple, continuous pain in the region of armpit & breast, thickening or formation of the lump in the armpit & breast and swelling of the collarbone region & armpit.

Treatment following the detection

Any of the above symptoms determine an early stage breast cancer and any woman having such symptoms should immediately contact her general physician. Doctors examine the patient properly and if necessary, can refer them to a breast clinic for more examinations and mammogram. Upon detection of a lump, the cancerous cells can be extracted with the help of a delicate needle. A biopsy should also be done to ascertain, if the affected area or lump is malignant.

Every woman should know how to do self-examination of her beasts, so that she can know her breasts easier and recognise abnormal changes on them.

How to Eliminate Breast Cancer and Stay Cancer Free!

What Is Breast Cancer? It is a common disease suffered by women on the breast. It is a very dangerous disease and it is well known as one of the most common diseases that contribute to the cause of death in most women. This disease commonly affects women at their 20s according to a research conducted by the American Medical Association and American Cancer Society. Age and sex is a major factor contributing to the cause of breast cancer.

It strikes women mostly from the age 20s and upward. There is a greater chance for women to develop breast cancer as they increase in age. The average woman at age 30 years has one chance in 280 of developing it within every 10 years.

This chances increase to one in 70 for a woman aged 40 years, as well as to one in 40 at the age 50 years. Women aged; from 60s has a one in 30 chance of developing breast cancer in the next 10 years.

Skin colour also is another factor that contributes to a woman being strike by this horrible disease. White women in particular are most likely strike by this horrible disease than the black African or black African Caribbean women. Millions of women are being diagnose with breast cancer every year. It is commonly referred to as abnormal cells that are mutated to a point that they are no longer normal. People wonder, and they keep asking, why do women suffer from this disease?

There are several causes of breast cancer but I will be listing just a few as listed below:

1) Environmental Causes: Women who receive radiation treatment / therapy for the treatment of diseases like Hodgkin’s disease stand a higher chance and risk of developing the infections at their 30s.

2) Hormonal Causes: The disease commonly hit women whose menstrual cycle started too early, e.g. at 11 years old. Naturally, an average age for a menstrual cycle to start in women is about the age of 12. So for those who started earlier, these women run high risk of getting the disease sometime in their lifetime, particularly before they reach the age of 30? Women who also experience a late menopause (from the age of 50, 55 or even older) have a slightly greater risk of developing breast cancer. However, on the other hand, being older at the time of the first menstrual cycle and early menopause, this also tends to protect women from being affected.

3) Inheritance: Most and many types of the diseases are inherited from friends and relatives. For this reasons, most doctors will always asked their patient of their parental background in order to have an idea of the family history on generational related illnesses, e.g. breast cancer, high blood pressure and many more. It is true that most people who suffer from certain diseases, it is very likely because, such diseases stays in their family heritage /system and it is therefore passed on to later generations. This implies that, if you had a grandmother, mother, great-grandmother, sister or cousin, who had some certain diseases, you may get it as well in the future. It is better to take early precautions. Remember the saying that goes “Prevention Is Better than Cure.”

4) Lifestyle and Dietary Causes: The consumption of diet with too much saturated fat and oil can cause breast cancer. Diet that includes monounsaturated fats like canola oil and olive oil does not appear to cause or increase the chance of infection. Women who consume 3 to 5 bottles of alcoholic beverages per day will increase the risk of having breast cancer, than those women who are do not drink.
